Dental sealants are a type of preventive treatment which work to protect your child’s teeth. Sealants are made from a clear or tooth-colored resin material, which is painted onto the chewing surface of the molars. This resin forms a smooth, protective coating over the tooth, blocking out plaque, food debris and other decay-causing factors. Sealants are typically applied when the permanent molars begin to come in (between ages 6 and 12), and provide several years of protection for the teeth. They can be applied in just a few minutes during your child’s regular dental visits.
Fluoride is a natural mineral, and can be found in many foods. It is also added to many water supplies. Your child will receive a certain amount of fluoride from their diet and from brushing with fluoridated toothpaste. However, professional fluoride treatment may also be beneficial in strengthening their teeth and preventing cavities from developing. Fluoride works by remineralizing the tooth enamel to make it less susceptible to decay. Our team will check your child’s fluoride levels during their regular visits, and can provide a fluoride treatment in just a few minutes as needed. Professional fluoride is available as a gel, varnish or foam.
