Your child’s dental care begins before birth. If you are pregnant, we invite you to call Dimond Family Dental Center at 907-344-5544 and make an appointment with Dr. Ken Wynne. Our caring dentist and team can provide you with information and treatments to help keep you and your baby healthy. We are committed to providing quality oral care before birth in Anchorage, Alaska, so that your baby can begin their life with a healthy mouth.
Pregnancy means significant changes to your body and lifestyle, and caring for your teeth and gums is every bit as important as caring for the rest of your body. Pregnancy changes your hormone levels, increasing your risk of oral health issues. As your oral health is a contributing factor to your child’s dental future, this makes it important that you take the steps to keep your mouth healthy during pregnancy.
The American Dental Association® recommends that you continue your regular care routine, including dental checkups and cleanings. You should plan your first dental health checkup upon learning about your pregnancy with a second prenatal dental health check six months afterwards. We recommend that you:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste. Ideal times to brush are right after you wake up and right before you go to sleep.
- Floss daily.
- Use a mouthwash.
- Practice healthy eating habits and limit your intake of sugary or processed foods.
- Reduce or limit snacking between meals.
- Address medical concerns immediately, including toothaches. While a toothache could appear to be a minor annoyance, it could turn into an oral infection and spread through your body and to your baby.
Dr. Wynne may make other recommendations during your appointment.
